There was a moment of silence while the wheels turned in Kurtzmanâs mind. âIt tells me Baibakov has at least half a platoon of hard-core soldiers at his disposal. Iâm betting the .44 Magnum revolvers and the Barrett .50s are personal weapons.â
Bolan nodded. âWhat else do you notice?â
âIâm way ahead of you. He acquired only a relatively small quantity of plastic explosive. More than enough to make a couple of car bombs, but nowhere near enough to blow up anything of major significance. I think the plastique is more for tactical use than as their primary weapon. Baibakov has outfitted his people like soldiers going off to a war. I donât think theyâre planning on blowing up the White House or the United Nations Building. My bet is they intend to pull off some kind of military-style raid, and theyâre going to do it in strength. Thatâs assuming, of course, that Baibakov hasnât picked up a few tons of ammonia fertilizer and some trucks we havenât heard about. I also donât believe all his men are Red Falcons. Iâd bet heâs picked up some Russian shooters from the mafiya who are looking for action. Heâd want only the best, though. Iâd expect ex-military men who are fluent in English.â
Bolan smiled. Those were his thoughts exactly. âI have more, but itâs not good. Baibakov has contacted the Russian mafiya in the capital.â
Kurtzman sighed. âWell, that was to be expected. It still doesnât help much. D.C. is a big city, and it must have hundreds of legitimate targets for the Red Falcons.â
âI have one other piece of information. Itâs a strange one. Pushkin mentioned that Baibakov had made some sort of cryptic inquiry about Vermont.â
For a moment the line was silent. âVermont?â
âVermont.â
Kurtzman sounded puzzled. âYou mean the state.â
âThatâs right. Run that through your short-list and see if it cross-references with anything.â
âHold on.â The Executioner waited while Kurtzman crunched data, and then he heard the magic word. âBingo.â
âWhat have we got?â
âWe have Eudora McCain, United States senator from the Green Mountain State.â
A line drew down between Bolanâs eyebrows. âShe sounds vaguely familiar.â
Kurtzman punched more computer keys. âShe red-flagged immediately when I cross-referenced Vermont. Sheâs one of the individual targets near the top of our short-list.â
âWhat makes her a priority?â
âSheâs always been very cause oriented, and in the past year the fighting in Bosnia has risen to the top of her agenda.â
Bolan frowned. âSo she joined the peace bandwagon.â
âWell, she actually seems more intellectually honest than that. Senator McCain went to Bosnia early in 1995 and toured with a Senate subcommittee investigative team. She saw one of the mass graves being excavated outside of a Croatian village. It had nearly a hundred civilian bodies in it, most of them women and children. Apparently McCain was profoundly affected by it. Ever since her return to the United States, she has been huge in spearheading the effort to send U.S. peacekeeping troops in to stop the fighting. She defends it nearly every day on the floor of the Senate.
